Event: Riverview Park and N. Downtown Loop Group Ride followed by Backyard Cookout and Social
Date: Sunday, September 30
Time: 1 PM
Location: 711 and 717 Lyons Court Lane ( Map)
Description: Meet on Lyons Court Lane (North Downtown area off Park Street) at 1pm. We will ride as a group on city streets from the North Downtown/Martha Jefferson area to Riverview Park (Woolen Mills neighborhood). We will then continue north on the paved Rivanna Trail (2 miles paved) and rejoin the road loop on River Road. Then we'll climb a steep hill (!) to Locust Ave. and ease our way back via the bike lane to the Lyons Court Lane area.
The total distance of this ride is approx. 6 miles. There is a long downhill section (E. Jefferson St.) going to Riverview Park that requires good braking; and there is a steep climb up River Road. I would call this a moderately difficult ride because of the hills. Otherwise, I consider it a safe route on relatively quiet streets. Kid riders must be able to ride safely in the streets and in single-file in some instances. I have posted a map online of this route. After the ride we will have a cookout (hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, etc.) in 2 adjoining back yards, along with backyard fun and games for the kids. This will be a great time to get to know one another and to talk about future rides we want to take. The thought is that the food will be provided and that we will ask for contributions to cover the costs.
This should be a lot of fun!

The C'ville Family Bike Club was well represented at the recent Woodlake Youth Triathlon in Richmond. Pictured L to R: Hannah, Ellie, Maeve and Meg (along with several other Charlottesville kids not pictured) enjoyed the swim-ride-run event. Sunday, August 26 End your kids' summer with the Charlottesville Youth Triathlon, a fun swim/bike/run event for kids age 7-14 to be held in Crozet on Aug. 26. My then-7-year-old daughter participated last summer with her Littl' Puddin' bike and loved it. No experience required. Back by popular demand, the next meeting of the Jr. Mountain Biking Club will be this Sunday, June 17th, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in McIntire Park. We'll meet in the same spot as before - just above the pavillions. This is Father's Day, so we encourage dads to come out as well and participate with their kids! What you need: - Young lungs, ages 4 and up
- Bicycle
- Helmet
- Water
We'll plan to ride a quick practice loop and work on some skills at the pavillions, then head off to the woods for an hour or so. Any questions at all, please reply to myself and Lorianne. Look forward to seeing everyone from last time as well as some new faces as well. My best, Dave T. |

What better way to enjoy the local countryside than by riding along the flat Sugar Hollow Road (Rt. 614) from the White Hall area to the Sugar Hollow Reservoir dam? It's about 4.5 miles to the dam, where we'll park a snack car to refuel for the return trip. Along the way we'll stop and cool off in the Moormans River (you might even want to wear your bathing suit!). 9 miles roundtrip. First half-mile is downhill (which means the last half-mile is uphill); rest of route is flat; mostly shaded.
This will be our first local ride, and our first on an active (though relatively quiet) road. All participants should be able to handle riding with traffic. Not appropriate for kids on training wheels. The ride will be led by 2 Family Bike Club adults. Two dates to choose from:Saturday, June 16, 10 AM. Meet at the Mount Olivet Baptist Church on Rt. 614 just past White Hall.
Sunday, June 17, 10 AM. Do NOT park at the church today; park instead at one of the two convenience stores in White Hall - just be sure to ask permission; adds a bit to roundtrip mileage.
